Every baby's family looks different — grandparents, two moms, two dads, one parent, a big blended crew. These are the words for the people who show up and love your baby, whoever they are — using the standard/southern terms (外婆/外公, 伯伯/伯母). There's a Northern China version too, with its own set of terms for the same relatives.

At 3-6 months babies are refining face recognition and starting to distinguish familiar caregivers from strangers; consistently naming who's who while making eye contact builds an early link between a face and a word — and pairing it with warm affection teaches that love has a sound before it has meaning.
