Bedtime story
During the Ming Dynasty, there lived a remarkable admiral named Zheng He.
The emperor sent Zheng He to lead a huge fleet of ships on voyages far across the sea, to see distant parts of the world.
Zheng He's fleet was an amazing sight! It included hundreds of great ships, and the largest of them — called "treasure ships" — were longer than a football field, carrying thousands of sailors.
Between 1405 and 1433, Zheng He led seven separate voyages, each one lasting years. His fleet sailed to Southeast Asia, to India, to the Arabian Peninsula, and even all the way to the distant east coast of Africa!
Everywhere he went, Zheng He brought gifts and traded peacefully with local people, exchanging spices, silk, and precious treasures. He never tried to conquer or take anyone's land.
From Africa, Zheng He brought back a gift that amazed everyone back home — a real, live giraffe! No one in China had ever seen an animal with such a long neck before, and everyone thought it was wondrous.
Zheng He's voyages happened almost a hundred years before some of the most famous European sea explorers ever set sail!
Why this story matters
Zheng He's Voyages to the Western Seas shows just how advanced Chinese shipbuilding and navigation already were hundreds of years ago, and how Zheng He chose curiosity, trade, and friendship over conquest wherever his fleet traveled.
