Audio coming soon
Bedtime story
Long ago, there was an old man named Yu Gong, nearly ninety years old. Two enormous mountains, Taihang and Wangwu, stood right in front of his house, so tall and wide that his family had to travel a long way around them just to get anywhere. One day, Yu Gong gathered his whole family and announced, "These mountains are blocking our way — it's terribly inconvenient. Let's dig them away, together!"
His family agreed, and the very next day, Yu Gong and his sons and grandsons picked up their shovels and baskets and began digging away at the mountains, carrying off the dirt bit by bit.
A neighbor, known as Wise Old Man, saw this and couldn't help laughing at him. "You're already so old you can barely pull a single blade of grass from the ground," he said, "and yet you think you can move two entire mountains? What a foolish dream!"
Yu Gong wasn't bothered at all. "It's true I'll die one day," he replied calmly, "but I have sons, and my sons will have sons, and on and on, without end. But these mountains? They can only get smaller as we dig — they can never grow any bigger. Someday, surely, we will finish the job." Wise Old Man had no answer to that, and fell silent.
Yu Gong's family kept digging, day after day, year after year, without ever giving up. Their determination moved the gods in heaven, who sent down two mighty giants to carry the two mountains away entirely. From that day on, the road in front of Yu Gong's house was flat and clear, and his family never had to travel the long way around again.
Moral of the story
This story shows how persistence can overcome even the biggest challenges:
- Steady effort can accomplish what seems impossible. The mountains were enormous, but digging a little each day meant the job would eventually be finished.
- Don't give up before you even start just because something looks too hard. Wise Old Man only saw the difficulty in front of him, while Yu Gong saw the long road ahead — and believed in it.
In short: Don't let something looking "too big" stop you from starting — with enough persistence, even mountains can move.
