小时候的李白，是个非常调皮的孩子，读书三天打鱼两天晒网，一点耐心都没有。
有一天，他读书读得实在腻烦了，把书本一扔，偷偷溜出学堂，跑到外面去玩。
他走着走着，路过一条小溪，看见溪边坐着一位白发苍苍的老婆婆，手里拿着一根粗粗的铁棒，正对着一块石头，一下一下地磨着。
李白觉得好奇，凑过去问：“老婆婆，您这是在做什么呀？”
老婆婆头也不抬，回答说：“我要把这根铁棒磨成一根绣花针。”
李白一听，忍不住笑出声来：“铁棒这么粗，绣花针那么细，这得磨到什么时候才能磨成啊？”
老婆婆停下手里的动作，抬起头，认真地看着他，说：“只要我每天都不停地磨，铁棒总有一天会变细，变成一根针的。功夫下到了，还怕做不成吗？”
这句话，像一记重锤，敲在了李白心里。他站在那儿，愣了好久，忽然明白了一个道理。
从那天起，李白再也没有偷懒过，回到学堂，认认真真地读书写字，日复一日，从不间断。
后来，他终于成为了中国历史上最伟大的诗人之一。
这就是铁杵磨成针的故事。只要功夫深，铁杵也能磨成针。

Bedtime story
As a boy, the great poet Li Bai was quite mischievous and had little patience for his studies — he'd work hard for a few days, then slack off for a while. One day, tired of reading, he tossed his book aside and snuck out of the schoolhouse to play.
As he wandered along, he came to a small stream and saw an old woman with silvery white hair sitting by the water, grinding a thick iron rod against a stone, over and over again. Curious, Li Bai walked over and asked, "Grandmother, what are you doing?"
Without looking up, the old woman replied, "I'm grinding this iron rod into a sewing needle." Li Bai couldn't help but laugh. "That rod is so thick, and a needle is so thin — how long could that possibly take?"
The old woman paused, looked up at him seriously, and said, "As long as I keep grinding a little every single day, this rod will eventually become thin enough to be a needle. If you put in the effort, what is there to fear not accomplishing?"
Her words struck Li Bai like nothing he had ever heard before. He stood there in silence for a long moment, and something clicked into place. From that day forward, he never slacked off again. He returned to his studies and worked diligently, day after day, without fail — and he eventually became one of the greatest poets in Chinese history.
Moral of the story
This story is about what steady, patient effort can accomplish:
- Even something that seems impossible can be achieved through persistence. The iron rod was thick and heavy, but the old woman believed that grinding it a little each day would eventually turn it into a needle.
- Small daily effort beats working in fits and starts. Li Bai only became a great poet once he learned to keep showing up, day after day, instead of giving up after a few tries.
In short: Patience and daily persistence can accomplish what looks impossible — as the old saying goes, with enough effort, even an iron rod can be ground into a needle.
