Bedtime story

Once upon a time, in the State of Song in ancient China, there was a man who owned a very fertile piece of farmland. He worked hard every day, and as a result, his harvests were plentiful. In the middle of his field, there was a tree stump, and whenever he grew tired from working, he would sit there to rest.

One day, as he was plowing his field, a rabbit suddenly dashed through. In its panic, it ran straight into the tree stump and died on the spot. The man was overjoyed. “What luck!” he exclaimed. “I’ve got a rabbit without even trying!” Holding the rabbit, he began walking home, thinking to himself, “If I could just sit here every day and wait, maybe I wouldn’t have to work so hard anymore.”

From the next day on, he abandoned his tools and sat by the tree stump every day, waiting for more rabbits to run into it. Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months. Meanwhile, his once-fertile field became overgrown with weeds. The man waited and waited, but no rabbit ever ran into the stump again.

Moral of the story

This story is a cautionary tale about laziness and relying on luck:

  1. Luck is rare and unreliable. The first rabbit was a complete accident—an unusual stroke of good fortune. Expecting it to happen every day is unrealistic.
  2. Hard work is the true path to success. The man’s original diligence brought him steady, reliable rewards. When he gave up and relied on chance, he ended up with nothing.

In short: You can’t depend on luck to replace effort. Success requires consistent work, not idle waiting for opportunities that might never come.
