Audio coming soon

Bedtime story

A very long time ago in China, the land was divided into several separate kingdoms, and they often fought with one another, with no single ruler in charge of them all.

One of these kingdoms was called Qin, and its king had enormous ambition. Over many years, he defeated each of the other kingdoms, one by one, and for the first time in history, brought all of China together as a single, unified empire.

After unifying the land, he gave himself a brand-new title — "Shǐ Huángdì," meaning "First Emperor."

Qin Shi Huang noticed that different regions used different writing systems, different money, and even carts with wheels spaced differently — which made trading goods and sending messages very confusing.

So he made a rule: the whole empire would use the same writing system, the same currency, and carts with wheels of the same width.

Now, no matter where you traveled in China, you could read the same writing, use the same money, and trade goods much more easily.

Qin Shi Huang also connected and strengthened several separate defensive walls in the north into one long wall — the very beginning of what would later become the famous Great Wall of China.

Why this story matters

Qin Shi Huang Unifies China tells the story of how China's very first emperor brought a divided land together and made rules that let people communicate and trade far more easily. His decisions shaped China for thousands of years afterward.

💡 Did you know? Qin Shi Huang is also famous for the enormous Terracotta Army — thousands of life-sized clay soldiers, each with a different face — discovered by archaeologists near his tomb in 1974.
