Bedtime story
During the Warring States period in China, there was a man from the state of Chu who was crossing a river by boat. While the boat was in the middle of the river, he accidentally dropped his precious sword into the water. He tried to grab it, but it had already sunk. Everyone on the boat felt very sorry for him.
However, the man seemed to have a plan. He took out a small knife and carved a mark on the side of the boat. He said, “This is where my sword fell into the river. I need to mark the spot.”
The other people on the boat didn’t understand why he was doing this, but they didn’t ask any more questions.
When the boat reached the shore, the man jumped into the river at the spot where he had carved the mark, hoping to retrieve his sword. He searched for a long time, but the sword was nowhere to be found. Puzzled, he muttered to himself, “Isn’t this where my sword fell? I even made a mark here, why can’t I find it?”
Hearing this, the others laughed and said, “The boat was moving all along, but your sword sank to the bottom of the river. It didn’t move with the boat! How could you possibly find it at the spot you marked?”
Moral of the story
This story illustrates an important lesson: before you act, you need to understand the actual situation and choose a method that fits reality. Things in the world change, so relying on old habits or rigid rules won’t always work. In this story, the man’s method was wrong because he ignored the fact that the sword sank and the river carried the boat away.
If it were you, and your sword fell into a river, here’s what you should do:
- Act immediately: Try to retrieve it right away.
- Use proper tools if needed: If the river is deep or the current is strong, use ropes, nets, hooks, or other equipment to help retrieve it.
