Bedtime story

Once upon a time, there was a clever, brave young woman named Hua Mulan.

One day, the emperor ordered that one man from every family must join the army. In Mulan's family, her father was old and unwell, and there was no grown son to take his place.

Watching her father worry, Mulan made a bold decision: she would disguise herself as a man and go in his place.

She put on armor, mounted a horse, quietly said goodbye to her family, and set off with the army.

In camp, Mulan trained and fought alongside the male soldiers for twelve years. She was skilled and brave in battle, and not a single person discovered that this fearless soldier was actually a woman.

When the long war finally ended, Mulan had earned great honor. The emperor wanted to give her an important government position — but Mulan simply asked to be allowed to go home to her family instead.

Back home, Mulan took off her armor, put on her own clothes again, and did her hair — then went out to greet the comrades she had fought beside for so many years.

Her fellow soldiers were completely astonished — the brave warrior who had survived twelve years of battle beside them had been a woman all along!

Why this story matters

Hua Mulan Joins the Army is a story about love for family combined with real courage and cleverness. Mulan is one of the most beloved heroines in Chinese history — someone who quietly did something extraordinary out of love, and asked for nothing in return.

💡 Did you know? Mulan's story comes from a short 6th-century poem called the 《木兰辞》 (Ballad of Mulan), still memorized by Chinese schoolchildren today.
