6–9 months
First Games
Babbling turns into babbling-with-intent.
Around six months, babies begin babbling in earnest and start noticing that sounds and actions can go back and forth between two people — the earliest foundation of joint attention, one of the most consistent predictors of later vocabulary size. This is the stage to turn narration into simple interactive games: peekaboo, anticipation games, and pausing to let baby 'take a turn' with a look, a reach or a babble. You're not teaching words yet so much as teaching the game of communication itself.
- Turn-taking games: peekaboo, anticipation, tickle games
- Exaggerated pitch and pauses that invite a response
- Repetition across the same daily routines
- Watching for baby's own attempts to 'take a turn'
